You had the city fooled with the identity you created, the legacy you took advantage of. When the bakery burned down, the entire city felt the loss Dash except for the former employees. I remember Erin coming out with her trauma from being harassed at work every day. I remember meeting a former employee while working my shift at the farmers market who warned me of the gross work environment she had not missed. I remember how dismissive Chase was when I asked about applying for a job. I will never forget how I felt when you guys wrote me up for being late to work. The only time I was late. After I tearfully had to expose the reason – something I was not comfortable with at the time, because I had not even processed how I woke up to a male stranger sleeping in my bed when I was 19 years old. You guys did not even ask if I was okay. I had more respect for my college professors who I interacted with 2-3 times a semester.
The hardest part is that this is not the story the community thinks of in the wake of your business’s loss. They think of delicious baked goods, an airy environment, and a near historical building. You guys did a great job at protecting your reputations. You even had me fooled as I drew a sentimental art piece as a token of my departure, and gratitude for the work experience. An experience that was totally derived by my feeling part of the Austin community. And despite their ignorance, I still feel grateful. I cannot blame you when I did not speak up. I learned at a young age what not to tolerate. I hope you all had your reckoning. You have sisters and mothers and no reason to treat women the way you do.
Sincerely,
Farmers Market Girl
